Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)

IVDD happens when a spinal disc herniates or ruptures and pushes into the spinal cord. When this happens, it inhibits nerve transmissions from moving along the spinal cord. IVDD can result from age, trauma, or the physical shock of a dog jumping off a chair or sofa. The dog usually feels pain when the disc ruptures, and it can lead to temporary or permanent paralysis. Treatment usually involves NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) made specifically for dogs. Physical therapy can have successful results as a treatment for IVDD.
