History

As legend has it, the Golden Retriever is a descendent of Russian circus dogs. But that’s where the story stays.

The real story of the Golden’s beginnings is in 19th century Scotland by Sir Dudley Majoribanks (later known as Lord Tweedmouth).

An avid breeder, Tweedmouth’s goal was to breed a gifted retriever that was an attentive hunting partner with a great nose. He was also breeding for temperament – Tweedmouth also wanted a dog that was even-tempered and loyal at home.

Tweedmouth bred his dog, Nous, a golden, wavy coated hunting dog, with a Tweed Water Spaniel. Now extinct, Tweed Water Spaniels were known for being enthusiastic retrievers and exceptionally calm in the home — characteristics you’ll find in Golden Retrievers today.

The offspring of these dogs were bred with other retrievers, a red setter, and another Tweed Water Spaniel.

Mainly keeping the yellow puppies, Tweedmouth continued his breeding program.

In 1911, The Kennel Club of England officially acknowledged the Golden Retriever as a distinct breed, and in 1932 Golden Retrievers were recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Traits

The friendly, loyal, intelligent and beautiful Golden is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Being slow to mature, the Golden retains many puppy-like qualities until they are four years old and some through to their senior years.

The lively Golden Retriever needs 45-60 minutes of daily exercise. Being an intelligent working dog, Goldens also thrives when given a job to do – from competing in dog sports, waking up family members, or even fetching the mail.

The sweet-natured Golden Retriever is keen to please its owner. However, one job not suited for this friendly breed is being a watchdog.

Goldens are family dogs that need to be with their human “pack” indoors. Although they are trustworthy and gentle with children, Golden Retrievers are large, boisterous dogs that can unintentionally topple a small child.

Golden Retrievers are abundant shedders. Ensure they have daily brushing to help keep their loose hair from scattering throughout your home. Although this will help contain their hair, you will have to get used to shedding when you live with a Golden.

Health

This breed is typically healthy, but like all breeds, they may experience specific health conditions. Not every dog of this breed will get these diseases, but it’s essential to be aware of them. Some common health problems include:

Regardless of how healthy your dog is, a pet’s health insurance plan can
help you stay prepared for any of your dog’s medical needs.
