Siberian wolves are known for their wolf-like looks, but beware because they are athletic and intelligent, which can challenge first-time dog parents. History
Siberian Huskies are believed to have originated among the Chukchi tribe of nomads. DNA tests confirm that the breed is among the oldest dog breeds, despite its relatively unknown history. The Chukchi used dogs as fast transportation and as family dogs. It was not uncommon for huskies to sleep with the children and provide them with warm, comfortable beds.
When the gold rush began in Alaska in 1908, Siberian Huskies were used as sled dogs. As of today, they continue to compete in the All-Alaska Sweepstakes, a 408-mile dogsled race.
In 1930 the last Siberian Husky was transported from Siberia when the Soviet government closed its borders. There was a continued flourishing of the breed in North America. Despite slight differences from their Siberian foundation dogs, Chukchi Sled Dogs, they maintain many of the beautiful qualities of that breed.
The AKC and the CKC recognized the Siberian Husky in 1930 and 1939, respectively.
Traits
With their eye-catching looks and awe-inspiring talents, Siberian Huskies have captured the imagination of the masses. Power and athleticism are the hallmarks of this medium-sized working dog. They were initially developed as sled dogs, and some are still used in this capacity. Huskies are remarkable dogs, capable of learning an extraordinary amount.

Huskies require obedience training like all other breeds. Still, they show an uncanny ability to distinguish between home and class – they behave beautifully when in a training class while disregarding commands at home.
Siberian Huskies are known for their escape skills. When given a chance, they will wander away from home. As a result, too many have been lost or injured. A buried fence and constant check of your yard for any means of escape are essential for Siberian Husky owners.
Siberian Huskies generally shed very little, except when they blow their coats at certain times of the year, dropping large amounts of hair all at once. In warmer climates, it can happen more often. When it does, the breed becomes a heavy shedder for about three weeks.
Siberian Huskies enjoy howling but rarely bark, and they won’t bark at anyone if they enter your property. They are therefore unsuitable as watchdogs. Huskies have a reputation for helping burglars instead of posing any threat.
For survival, Siberian Huskies need very little food. This is still true today, and the Siberian Husky does not require high calories per day. Follow the advice of your Siberian Husky’s breeder when serving helpings.
